Do you remember when the BRIT Awards were fun? Where government ministers went in fear ...

She may not have a great record in the movies (don’t know why: she was great in Evita and Desperately Seeking Susan, good in League of Their Own, was able to lie completely flat in The Next Best Thing and no, of course we didn’t see Shanghai Surprise), but this may the turning point for Madonna. She has co-written it with Alek Keshishian of In Bed with Madonna fame and we have a lot of time for Alek. Spent New Years Eve with him and Sting and Trudie as it happens but that’s a whole other showing-off session (we’ll even let you take notes). And she has directed the cream of young British acting talent in the form of Andea Riseborough and James D’Arcy in a story of love, intrigue, dark lipsticks, royal families, abdication, scandal, stockings with lines up the back and, you know, other stuff. It’s called W.E. – which we are assured is nothing to do with abbreviations used on certain dating sites – and it comes out this Friday. And the Queen Mum is probably spinning in her gin-soaked grave as we speak. We for one (or for several) will be donning small hats with little veils to go and see it.
